Iran unveils 15 major energy optimization projects
Initiatives expected to save 70 million barrels annually, boost private sector role in energy efficiency
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) has introduced 15 large-scale energy optimization projects across the industrial, construction, and transportation sectors, in a major investment organized in Tehran.
The projects form part of Iran’s wider strategy to curb energy consumption and are designed to attract both domestic and international private sector investment.
Officials say the measures could reduce national energy use by the equivalent of 70 million barrels of crude oil annually, or around 190,000 barrels per day, reported Mehr News.
The initiatives will be showcased during the “Transformation in Investment and Development in Iran’s Upstream Oil and Gas” event, where NIOC plans to present 200 investment opportunities across the energy sector.
The 15 highlighted projects represent a significant move toward energy efficiency in the country.
Six of the projects target energy-intensive industries, aiming to modernize production lines and upgrade energy systems. These efforts alone are projected to save over 6 million barrels of oil annually.
Another three projects focus on enhancing energy use in government and residential buildings through improved heating, cooling, and lighting systems, with an expected annual savings of nearly 11.6 million barrels.
The remaining six projects aim to modernize public transport fleets, promote electric vehicle adoption, and increase fuel efficiency in heavy vehicles. Together, these are projected to yield savings of nearly 52 million barrels per year.
The Iranian Fuel Consumption Optimization Company will oversee implementation of the initiatives, which are expected to lower production costs, support environmental goals, and create sustainable jobs.
Officials say the energy-saving measures could establish Iran as a regional leader in energy management, while offering investors flexible contractual models for participation in the country’s energy transformation.
