Iran hangs 2 men publicly for deadly shrine attack
TEHRAN, Iran (AA) – Iran has executed two men for an attack on a popular shrine in the southern province of Fars that killed 13 people.
The two men, identified as Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Naeim Hashem Qetali, were publicly executed in Shiraz, the capital of Fars province.
According to the Mizan news agency, which is affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, the sentences were previously upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court.
A gunman opened fire indiscriminately at the Shah Cheragh shrine in the city of Shiraz on October 26, 2022.
The 12th-century shrine, which houses the tomb of a revered Shiite scholar, is a popular attraction for local and foreign tourists.
The attacker, identified by Iranian media as Hamed Badakhshan, succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack.
The ISIS terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
In March, a court in Fars province sentenced two people to death for the attack after finding them guilty of aiding and abetting the attacker.
The other three defendants in the high-profile case were sentenced to prison terms ranging from five to 25 years for being members of the terrorist group ISIS.
A total of 42 people were arrested in connection with the attack, which shook the entire country.
In 2017, five heavily armed men attacked Iran’s parliament and the mausoleum of the country’s founder, Ayatollah Khomeini, in Tehran.
The attack on the shrine in Shiraz came amid widespread protests in Iran over the death of a 22-year-old Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, in police custody.
