Iran Hails ‘Progress’ In Nuclear Talks, But Raisi Insists US Sanctions Must End
Iran signaled “significant progress” Monday in talks on reviving a stalled accord on its nuclear program.
But President Ebrahim Raisi, on his first visit to a Gulf state, insisted Washington must lift its crippling sanctions on Iran.
The country’s president is a personal target of United States’ sanctions.
Raisi spoke out ahead of a summit of natural gas exporting nations in Qatar.
The summit will take place against the backdrop of mounting tensions in Ukraine.
Efforts are being made to restore a 2015 deal limiting Iran’s nuclear program.
The U.S. withdrew from the nuclear accord in 2018 under former president Donald Trump, who thought it wasn’t tough enough in curtailing Iran’s weapons ambitions.
