International Day In Support Of Victims Of Torture
The use of torture is prohibited by the United Nations convention that also opposes other cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment or punishment.
Yet, many countries still employ methods of torture, including beatings, waterboarding, rape, sleep deprivation and solitary confinement.
To increase global awareness of the problem, the U.N. designated June 26 as International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the proclamation, which strives to eliminate the practice globally.
Professor Amos Guiora, who teaches global perspectives on counterterrorism at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, said it’s important to recognize victims of torture.
Over 50,000 victims and their families are helped every year by programs supported by the U.N. Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture.
