Indonesian Court Sentences Teacher To Death For Rapes
On Monday, an Indonesian court delivered a death sentence to a teacher for raping 13 girls at an Islamic school.
Prosecutors appealed for the death penalty after Herry Wirawan initially received a sentence of life in prison by a court in the city of Bandung in February.
The case has sent shockwaves across Indonesia, shining a spotlight on the need for protecting children from sexual violence in religious boarding schools.
Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim-majority country.
It has over 37,000 madrasahs or Islamic schools nationwide, with tens of thousands residential Islamic boarding schools, according to Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Ministry.
