Indian top court dismisses petitions against its ruling on Kashmir special status
India’s top court has dismissed review petitions, upholding its earlier ruling endorsing the federal government’s decision to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, which is claimed by Pakistan.
The court heard arguments on numerous petitions challenging the legality of the federal legislation.
Last December, the court upheld the legality of legislation passed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government on Aug. 5, 2019.
The move stripped the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region of its recognition as a state, as well as its special status.
Following the government’s move, nearly 20 petitions were filed with the Supreme Court, calling the decision unconstitutional.
