Indian Muslim Activist Recounts Two ‘Painful’ Years In Jail
Lawyer and activist Ishrat Jahan was released from jail in the Indian capital New Delhi last week, after more than two years of imprisonment.
She was hugged by her sister, and the duo burst into tears as relatives gathered around to welcome her home.
Jahan said she was subjected to extra surveillance as well as periods of solitary confinement while imprisoned.
The 31-year-old was arrested along with dozens of other Muslims in February 2020.
This was during mass protests against a controversial citizenship law.
The Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government in December 2019.
It allowed only non-Muslim migrants and refugees from neighbouring countries to secure Indian citizenship if they arrived in India before December 2014.
Together with a proposed National Register of Citizens, many activists feared the two measures were aimed at disenfranchising India’s Muslim minority.
