India Arrests Editor As Press Crackdown Escalates In Indian Held Kashmir
Prominent Kashmiri journalist Fahad Shah was detained by the Indian army on Friday, under terrorism and sedition laws in Indian-held Kashmir.
Shah is the founder and editor of the widely read local news website The Kashmir Walla.
The 33-year-old has reported about Kashmir for several international publications, including the UK-based Guardian newspaper.
His arrest came after he reported on an Indian army raid which left four Kashmiris dead.
Shah gave the army’s perspective, but also provided a family’s interview, saying that their son was a civilian appealing to the government to return his body.
Police determined that news to be anti-national.
Despite mounting pressure and threats, Shah and his team of reporters continued to cover alleged human rights abuses carried out by the Indian military in the region.
His arrest comes in the wake of an aggressive crackdown on independent journalists in Kashmir, which is disputed between India and Pakistan and home to a long-running insurgency.
