In call with Netanyahu, Biden stresses immediate need for Gaza cease-fire
President Joe Biden has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a cease-fire in Gaza in return for prisoners.
The White House said in the call with Netanyahu, Biden also discussed regional developments, including the cease-fire deal in Lebanon.
Last week, Biden told reporters “some progress” is being made in prisoner exchange talks.
Biden said he hopes his administration can broker such a deal before he leaves office on January 20.
The prisoner swap and cease-fire talks, which are being mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the U.S., have been interrupted several times due to new conditions imposed by Netanyahu.
The Israeli opposition and families of prisoners accuse Netanyahu of obstructing efforts to reach a Gaza cease-fire and prisoner exchange deal with Hamas.
