Illegal medical lab discovered in California using bioengineered mice
SACRAMENTO, California – Investigators in California have discovered an illegal medical laboratory containing nearly 1,000 bioengineered mice and infectious agents.
The infectious agents include microbes linked to diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, E. coli, malaria, herpes and coronavirus.
The lab was located in a warehouse in Reedley, California, and was operated by Prestige Biotech, a Las Vegas-based company.
The company had previously operated a lab in Fresno, but it burned down.
Authorities believe the lab was used to manufacture COVID-19 and pregnancy tests.
The mice were bioengineered to capture and carry the coronavirus, and they were used to test the effectiveness of the drugs.
The lab also contained a number of other biohazardous materials, including blood, tissue and other body fluids.
Authorities also found thousands of containers of unlabeled fluids and suspected biological materials.
All biohazardous materials present in the lab were destroyed.
Wang Zhaolin, a spokesman for Prestige, told investigators that drugs against COVID -19 had been tested at the facility.
