ICC launches fund to support displaced Afghan women cricketers
Joint initiative with BCCI, ECB, and Cricket Australia offers funding, training, and mentorship
KABUL, Afghanistan (MNTV) — The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the creation of a task force to support displaced Afghan women cricketers, marking a major step toward ensuring their continued participation in the sport despite their uncertain circumstances.
The initiative, unveiled Sunday, is a collaborative effort between the ICC and the cricket boards of India (BCCI), England and Wales (ECB), and Australia (CA).
It includes the establishment of a dedicated fund to provide direct financial assistance to Afghan women athletes and a high-performance programme offering advanced coaching, world-class facilities, and tailored mentorship.
“We are deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and ensuring every cricketer has the opportunity to shine, regardless of their circumstances,” said ICC Chairman Jay Shah.
“This initiative reflects our dedication to cricket’s global growth and its power to inspire unity, resilience, and hope.”
The ECB also welcomed the move.
“We are proud to support this new initiative from the ICC,” said ECB chief executive Richard Gould.
“We want the Afghanistan women’s team to continue being a beacon of hope for all women and girls.”
The ICC requires all full member nations, including Afghanistan, to maintain a national women’s team.
This task force aims to preserve the sporting careers of displaced players while reinforcing cricket’s potential to transcend borders and adversity.
The programme is expected to support the athletes not only in continuing their cricketing development but also in their broader personal and professional growth.
