Houthi attacks on tankers threaten Red Sea ecosystems, US warns
US Central Command (CENTCOM) has warned that recent Houthi attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea pose a significant risk to maritime ecosystems.
On Monday, CENTCOM revealed the Houthis targeted two tankers with ballistic missiles and uncrewed aerial systems.
The MV Amjad, carrying about 2 million barrels of oil, is at risk, while another vessel, the Greek-operated MV Delta Sounion, remains on fire from a previous attack.
CENTCOM criticized these as “reckless acts of terrorism” for destabilizing regional and global commerce and endangering lives and the environment.
The Red Sea is crucial for global oil shipments.
In response, CENTCOM plans to enhance protection efforts and work with international partners to mitigate environmental impacts.
This is despite ongoing Houthi aggression linked to Israel’s war on Gaza.
