House of Representatives votes 368-7 to probe Pakistan elections
In a 368-7 vote on Wednesday, the House of Representatives called for an impartial investigation into election manipulation in Pakistan.
The resolution calls for a “full and independent investigation of claims of interference or irregularities in Pakistan’s February 2024 election.”
The issue was most forcefully raised by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
PTI was deprived of its election symbol which forced its leaders to participate in the election as independent candidates.
Many PTI leaders, including Khan, found themselves behind bars on a range of legal charges as the country went to the polls.
The aim of House Resolution 901 is, in the words of the resolution itself, to express support for democracy and human rights in Pakistan.
In response Pakistan’s lower house of parliament passed a resolution Friday denouncing the resolution.
The legislative National Assembly stated that Pakistan “will not accept any interference in its internal affairs, and the subject resolution is an attempt to undermine the state.”
