Historic Qalaa Mosque undergoes restoration under state project
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) – The historic Qalaa Mosque in Al-Hinakiyah, northeast of Madinah, is being restored as part of the second phase of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historic Mosques.
The initiative seeks to preserve the Kingdom’s Islamic heritage, emphasizing its significance as the land where the Qur’an was revealed and home to the Two Holy Mosques.
The restoration project will expand the mosque’s area from 181 square meters to 263 square meters, increasing its capacity to accommodate 171 worshippers.
Previously unused, the mosque will be revived using natural materials such as clay and local wood to maintain its original architectural style.
The renovation will also preserve traditional building techniques adapted to the local environment and hot desert climate.
The project balances traditional and modern construction standards to ensure the sustainability of historic mosques.
Saudi companies and engineers specializing in heritage restoration are leading the efforts.
This phase follows the successful completion of phase one in 2018, which restored 30 mosques across 10 regions in the Kingdom.
The initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving its cultural and religious heritage while enhancing community spaces for worship.
