Historic mosque tied to Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali secures major preservation grant
Masjid Muhammad, Washington’s iconic mosque linked to Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, is set to receive a $150,000 grant from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.
It marks the first time a mosque has been honored by the program.
The award is part of a $3 million fund which will focus on critical renovations, including environmental and engineering studies for a planned LEED-certified expansion .
That is aimed at doubling worship space and enhancing community services.
The grant supports ongoing $6 million renovations with completion expected by late 2025.
Established in 1937 and known as The Nation’s Mosque, Masjid Muhammad has been pivotal in the Black Muslim community.
Albert Sabir, administrative director of the mosque, said the grant award is a tremendous recognition.
Since 2018, the fund has supported 304 sites related to Black heritage, totaling an investment of $27 million.
