Hindus and Sikhs clash in Toronto
Violence erupted in Toronto as protests involving Hindu and Sikh groups turned chaotic on Sunday, leading to three men being charged.
The unrest began at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton during a visit by Indian consular officials, escalating into fistfights and clashes as demonstrators voiced support for Khalistan, a proposed Sikh homeland.
Subsequent protests occurred at Westwood Mall and the Malton gurdwara in Mississauga, with some attendees waving the Indian national flag.
Police noted that the protests, while separate, were interconnected, resulting in multiple confrontations.
The incidents come amid strained relations between Canada and India, with allegations of violence against Sikh activists causing diplomatic tensions.
Both Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the violence, calling for peace in the community.
