Heatwave in southwestern U.S. spreads to Midwest, affecting millions of people
WASHINGTON (AA) – Scorching temperatures are spreading across the U.S. Midwest, and millions of people are feeling the heat.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will rise in southeastern California and nearly all of southern Arizona.
Thunderstorms are also expected in Arizona’s high-elevation regions.
A heat warning is also in effect for northwestern Utah.
Less severe heat warnings have been issued for parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Montana, and Texas.
North and central Texas are expected to see temperatures in the triple digits this week.
The weather service said heat indices are expected to be 110-115 Fahrenheit (43-46C).
In Nevada, two female hikers were found dead Saturday at Valley of Fire State Park.
The cause of death has not been officially announced, but it is suspected that the high temperatures may have drained them.
A temperature of 114F (45C) was recorded Saturday afternoon at the park, which is northeast of Las Vegas.
One body was found on the trail, while the other was found in a canyon.
