Harvard task force head supports Palestinian liberation struggle
The co-chair of the task force combating anti-Muslim bias in Harvard has been a supporter of the Palestinian liberation struggle.
Ali Asani, a Middle Eastern studies professor, has in the past vehemently opposed US support for Israel’s government, calling it an apartheid regime, as described by organizations like Human Rights Watch.
In February, interim Harvard president Alan Garber appointed Asani to co-chair the Presidential Task Force on Combating Anti-Muslim and Anti-Arab Bias.
The group was created to examine the recent history of anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bias and its current manifestations.
Media reports suggest that in May 2021, Asani signed onto a Harvard faculty member statement that expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle for freedom and self-determination.
More than 70 Harvard faculty members endorsed the statement, criticizing Israeli state violence and U.S. aid.
Asani has rallied behind student protests on campus against Israeli violence against Gaza, advocating against disciplinary action.
Recently, he urged Harvard’s president to negotiate with student protesters and oppose sanctions.
Asani, along with task force co-chairs, highlighted incidents of bias against Muslims and Arabs on campus.
The task force plans to release policy recommendations this fall to address such issues
