Gunman shoots elderly man on way to mosque in New York
NEW YORK – An 86-year-old man was shot in New York as he was on his way to pray at his local mosque.
The victim, identified as Homod Ali Saeidi, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident took place on Saturday morning in the Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens. The shooter, 25-year-old Thomas Abreu, is now in custody. The suspect had shot at three other people at separate locations.
According to authorities, Abreu was riding a moped when he opened fire on the victims.
Abreu then fled the scene and continued his rampage. He shot and injured two other people in Queens before being stopped by police. Abreu is now charged with murder, attempted murder and weapons possession.
Saeidi’s son, Ahmed Alsaedi, expressed shock at the killing. He said his father’s daily routine was to go for a walk before visiting a local park and then going to the mosque.
He had emigrated to America from Yemen in 1962. He was scheduled to return to his native Yemen next week for a family trip.
The defendant first shot a 21-year-old man in the shoulder in the Brooklyn neighborhood. He then crossed the Queens borough line and shot Alsaedi.
He then shot and wounded his third victim on Hillside Avenue. His fourth and final victim was a 63-year-old man
