Grand Egyptian Museum: A cultural marvel celebrating ancient Egypt
Largest museum dedicated to a single civilization set to open near the Pyramids of Giza
CAIRO, Egypt (MNTV) – The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), soon to be the world’s largest museum devoted to a single civilization, is preparing for its much-anticipated grand opening.
Described by Al Ahram as a monumental addition to Egypt’s cultural and historical landscape, the GEM spans a staggering 500,000 square meters—making it twice the size of the Louvre Museum and 2.5 times larger than the British Museum.
Strategically located near the Sphinx International Airport and overlooking the iconic Pyramids of Giza, the GEM showcases Egypt’s ancient legacy.
Its extraordinary collection includes the complete treasures of King Tutankhamun, making it a vital institution for cultural preservation.
The museum’s soft opening in November 2023 and a trial run in October 2024 unveiled its expansive gardens, grand staircase, hanging obelisk, cafés, and 12 exhibition halls.
These initial previews received global acclaim and earned the GEM UNESCO’s prestigious Prix Versailles for 2024 as one of the world’s most beautiful museums.
Construction of the GEM, a $1.2 billion project, underscores Egypt’s dedication to preserving its heritage.
The funding includes $750 million in loans, with the rest covered by the Egyptian government.
Officials expect the museum to become a cornerstone of Egypt’s tourism industry, drawing millions of visitors annually.
Preparations for the grand opening ceremony are underway, with plans for a spectacular celebration.
United Media Services Company, known for managing Egypt’s historic Royal Mummies Parade and Avenue of Sphinxes opening, is leading the efforts.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has emphasized the need for flawless execution to showcase Egypt’s cultural legacy on a global stage.
Mohamed Al-Saadi, a United Media Services board member, revealed plans for the event, including cultural performances, entertainment, and dignitary invitations.
The GEM’s opening promises to be more than just a national event. It is a global celebration of Egypt’s timeless contributions to human history and culture.
