Governor of Montana bans TikTok
HELENA, Montana – Governor Greg Gianforte has signed a law banning TikTok in Montana, the western U.S. state.
This is the first law of its kind that prohibits residents from using the Chinese app.
On Twitter, the governor said he banned TikTok in Montana to protect residents’ personal and private data from the Chinese Communist Party.
The ban will go into effect in January 2024. The law prohibits app stores from offering users the ability to download the app.
”To protect Montanans’ personal and private data from the Chinese Communist Party, I have banned TikTok in Montana,” said Gianforte.
App stores must pay $10,000 for each violation and $10,000 for each day if the violation continues.
Montana lawmakers voted to ban TikTok in April.
The U.S. and many other countries have already barred TikTok from government devices because of fears that China could gain access to user data.
