GOP Senator accuses Arab American witness of terror support in Senate hearing
Republican Senator John Neely Kennedy made unfounded accusations against Maya Berry, Executive Director of the Arab American Institute, during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on hate crimes the other day.
Kennedy asked Berry if she supported Hamas and Hezbollah, which are both designated terrorist groups in the US, prompting shocked reactions from the audience.
Berry firmly denied any association and used the moment to highlight the ongoing issue of hate in the US.
Despite her response, Kennedy continued pressing her, resulting in a tense exchange.
Berry, who is the only Muslim witness at the hearing, called the line of questioning “disappointing” and emphasized the need for addressing hate rather than fueling it.
Audience members applauded her response, which observers say underscores the challenge of combating Islamophobia in public discourse.
