Global lawmakers urge UN action to protect Uyghur detainees in Thailand
More than 50 lawmakers worldwide are calling on the United Nations to intervene and protect 48 Uyghur men who have been detained in Thailand for over a decade.
These detainees have been held at Thailand’s Immigration Detention Center since 2014.
They are at risk of being deported to China, where they could face severe persecution.
The men are among hundreds of Uyghurs who fled occupied East Turkestan, also called the Xinjiang region, seeking refuge in Southeast Asia.
While some were resettled in Turkey, many remain trapped in poor conditions in Thai detention, with no legal aid or visitors.
The Interparliamentary Alliance on China has urged UNHCR to ensure the safety of the Uyghur detainees, stressing that five have already died in custody.
