Glaucoma UK launches campaign to support eye health during Ramadan
Campaign ensures Muslims with glaucoma can manage their condition while observing the fast
LONDON, UK (MNTV) — Glaucoma UK has launched an important campaign in partnership with the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) and the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) to ensure that Muslims living with glaucoma can continue managing their eye health during the fasting month of Ramadan.
Glaucoma UK is a membership charity passionate about making sure that people living with glaucoma have a say in how and where their care and treatment are delivered.
The campaign focuses on guiding glaucoma patients who observe Ramadan to safely use their eye drops without compromising their fast, as reported by Optometry Today.
The campaign includes an illustrated poster, available for download on the Glaucoma UK website, which optical professionals can display in their practices to raise awareness and support patients.
Ramadan in the UK is expected to run until 30 March, depending on the sighting of the moon.
During this sacred time of fasting, it is essential that patients continue their treatment routine to prevent any risk to their sight.
Glaucoma UK has emphasized that, according to most Islamic scholars, using eye drops does not break the fast, and methods like punctal occlusion can be employed to prevent the medication from reaching the throat.
This ensures that those with glaucoma can continue their treatment while observing the spiritual significance of Ramadan.
Joanne Creighton, Chief Executive of Glaucoma UK, stated, “It’s crucial to maintain treatment throughout Ramadan, as even a brief interruption in glaucoma management can lead to irreversible sight loss. Our campaign aims to ensure that no one has to choose between their faith and their health.”
The charity’s website hosts a dedicated page providing more detailed information and tips on eye health management during Ramadan, catering to both patients and healthcare professionals.
This resource is designed to help the Muslim community protect their sight while respecting their religious practices.
A spokesperson from the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) highlighted the importance of safeguarding one’s health during Ramadan, emphasizing that caring for one’s well-being is an essential part of the observance of the month.
Dr. Sahira Dar, President of the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA), expressed her support for the initiative, saying, “Ramadan is a deeply cherished time for Muslims, and we are pleased to work with Glaucoma UK to promote good eye health during this special period. This collaboration ensures that patients can observe their fasts while managing their condition effectively.”
The joint campaign between Glaucoma UK, BIMA, and the MCB is a vital step in ensuring that Muslims with glaucoma can observe Ramadan without risking their vision.
By providing clear guidance and resources, the initiative supports both the spiritual and physical well-being of patients, demonstrating the power of collaboration in enhancing health outcomes for all.
