French officials support Muslim mayor who refused to speak for Palestine
In a heated controversy, senior French officials have rallied around Karim Bouamrane, a mayor of Moroccan descent after he was accused of keeping silent on Palestine.
A researcher Pascal Boniface labeled Bouamrane “Muslim in appearance” and suggested his popularity is linked to his silence on Israeli actions in Palestine.
Bouamrane, who previously declined a prime ministerial role, condemned Boniface’s comments as reinforcing stereotypes and damaging to individual identity.
In response, Minister Benjamin Haddad emphasized the importance of rejecting identity-based assignments.
Deputy Mayor Lamia el Aaraje chastised critics for denying Bouamrane’s independence of thought.
Boniface, director of an international and strategic relations think tank, wrote on X that Bouamrane had become a popular figure because he refused to criticize Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
