French citizen desecrates Quran to disturb peace in Greece
ISKECE, Greece (AA) – A French national’s attempts to desecrate the Holy Quran in Iskece province of Greece has invoked sharp reactions.
The Muslim leaders in Greece described it as an attempt to disturb peace in the region.
The elected Mufti Mustafa Trampa told a gathering in Iskece province that the act was an attack on sacred values.
He said violating human dignity and attacking sacred values cannot be considered freedom of expression.
He said it is the common duty of all people, not only Muslims, to respect faith and oppose such attacks.
Earlier, representatives of the Turkish minority in the region said a French national had torn up a copy of the Quran.
The suspect was taken to the local police station.
The provocative act was strongly condemned by prominent representatives of the Turkish minority as well as the Greek Ministry of Religious Affairs and Education.
The majority of the approximately 150,000 members of the Turkish minority in Greece live in Western Thrace, which borders Bulgaria and Türkiye.
