France officially recognizes Imam role as a profession
Move marks historic step in acknowledging imams within the country’s professional framework
PARIS, France (MNTV) — The French government has officially recognized the role of an imam as a profession, adding it to the country’s list of occupations managed by the French Employment Agency.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau announced the decision during the closing session of the second French Islam Forum (FORIF), emphasizing the significance of this recognition.
Retailleau highlighted that effective dialogue between the state and Muslim religious leaders must be rooted in trust and shared responsibility, as reported by Anadolu Agency.
He also stressed that the Muslim community rejects any misrepresentation of Islam by extremist ideologies.
While reaffirming the government’s stance of non-interference in religious institutions, Retailleau stated that the state can still offer support where needed.
As part of this initiative, the role of an imam has now been formally classified as an official profession in France, marking a historic first.
The move also includes the creation of standardized job descriptions and employment contracts for imams, establishing a structured framework for their work.
Addressing concerns about Islamophobia, Retailleau revealed that 173 anti-Muslim attacks were reported in the past year.
However, he acknowledged that the actual figure could be higher due to cases that go unreported.
To tackle these crimes, the government plans to launch a dedicated platform for reporting Islamophobic incidents.
Additionally, Muslim chaplains serving in hospitals and the military will now receive formal recognition as public service workers, ensuring their roles are fully integrated into state institutions.
