Four co-accused of former President Trump turn themselves in to jail
Security around the Fulton County Jail has been heightened in preparation for Trump’s expected surrender
ATLANTA, Georgia – Four people who were indicted alongside former President Donald Trump in connection with his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia have turned themselves in to the Fulton County Jail.
The four are: David Shafer, the former chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, Cathy Latham, the former chairman of the Coffee County Republican Party, Ray Smith, an attorney, Ken Chesebro, an attorney.
They are accused of participating in a plan to use false slates of Republican electors to keep Trump in office.
The other 15 co-defendants in the case have also been indicted, but not all of them have turned themselves in yet.
Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark have filed motions to delay their surrender.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is leading the prosecution against Trump and the other defendants. She has alleged that they broke the law by attempting to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia.
Trump is facing charges of violating anti-racketeering laws, soliciting a public officer to violate their oath, conspiring to impersonate a public officer, and conspiring to file false documents.
He has denied any wrongdoing and has called the indictment politically motivated.
Security around the Fulton County Jail has been heightened in preparation for Trump’s expected surrender. The jail has warned of a “hard lockdown” ahead of his arrival.
At least 12 of the 19 defendants have bond agreements.
The case is still ongoing, and it is unclear what the outcome will be. However, the fact that more co-defendants are turning themselves in suggests that the prosecution is making progress.
