Former Trump Aide Steve Bannon Sentenced To Four Months In Prison
Former Trump aide Steve Bannon was sentenced on Friday to four months in federal prison and ordered to pay a $6,500 fine for contempt of Congress.
The charges stemmed from Bannon’s defiance of a subpoena issued by the Jan. 6 House committee.
The U.S. Department of Justice had recommended Bannon be sentenced to six months in prison and fined $200,000.
Carl Nichols, the Trump-appointed U.S. district court judge presiding over the case, said he would suspend the sentence if Bannon files an appeal within two weeks.
That could allow Bannon to avoid prison for months.
Aaron Scherb, senior director of legislative affairs at Common Cause, said Congress’ subpoena power must have teeth to fulfill its oversight and investigatory responsibilities.
He added that no one should be able to defy congressional subpoenas with impunity.
The Jan. 6 House panel subpoenaed Bannon and other former Trump advisers in September 2021.
This is part of the probe into documents and testimony related to the Capitol insurrection.
