Former President Trump faces indictment for overturning 2020 presidential election
WASHINGTON – Former U.S. President Donald Trump may face a third indictment, this time for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Trump said he received a letter from Justice Department officials ordering him to face a grand jury investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the Capitol.
Trump has been indicted on two counts so far – for the hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels and in the federal case brought by the Justice Department over his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
His role in the Capitol riots, which are seen as an attempt to overturn the results of the presidential election, will be the third charge against him.
Trump has denied wrongdoing in both cases, claiming they were part of a political campaign against him.
Trump’s lawyers last week requested that the proceedings be delayed until after the 2024 election.
Georgia state prosecutors are also expected to announce a decision on whether or not to file charges against the former president to nullify the state’s 2020 election results.
Trump faces a number of legal challenges. It is not yet clear what charges might be brought against him, but the fact that he is a target of the investigation is an important development.
The grand jury that will ultimately decide whether to indict him was sworn in last week in Atlanta. Prosecutors have indicated that a decision could come in August.
Legal experts have said potential charges in events in the aftermath of the 2020 election could include conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of an official proceeding, in this case Congress’s certification of President Joe Biden’s electoral victory.
Trump disclosed about the target letter in a post on his Truth Social platform. The letter often precedes an indictment and to convey to individuals under investigation that prosecutors have gathered evidence linking them to a crime.
Trump said in his post that he has been given “a very short four days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an arrest and indictment.”
It seems that federal prosecutors have cast a wide net against Trump, who remains the Republican Party’s dominant front-runner for 2024 presidential race.
