Former Iranian official sounds alarm over malnutrition in Iran
TEHRAN, Iran – A former Iranian official has stated that more than half of the population in Iran does not eat enough calories per day.
Hadi Mousavi Nik, the former director general of the Ministry of Social Affairs, said nearly 57% of Iran’s population is malnourished.
He said the problem was exacerbated by Western sanctions and a lack of rainfall, which drove up food prices.
Nik warned of an impending humanitarian disaster and said the situation is likely to worsen in the coming months.
According to the data, 14.5 million children are malnourished, including 10 million under the age of 12.
A report by the Ministry of Labor also indicates that the poverty rate in Iran has increased by 50%.
