Forced Returns To Burma Must Stop Immediately, Says UN Rights Chief
U.N. human rights chief Volker Turk on Wednesday called for a moratorium on forced returns of refugees and migrants to Burma.
His comments follow news that Malaysia deported two Burmese nationals who sought protection through the U.N. refugee agency on Oct. 6.
More than 100 other nationals from Burma, some of whom had serious protection concerns, were also deported that day.
There was no adequate assessment of their situation as required by international law, the U.N. Human Rights Office said.
Since the start of Burma’s military coup on Feb. 1, 2021, at least 70,000 people have fled the nation.
More than 1 million remain internally displaced, the U.N. reports.
Another 1 million Muslim Rohingyas have found refuge in Bangladesh, mainly following a 2017 Burmese military genocide against their community.
