Florida Supreme Court Rejects Desantis’ Push For Redistricting
The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday denied Gov. Ron DeSantis’ inquiry about redistricting a 200-mile congressional district linking Black neighborhoods.
The state is in the midst of a redistricting process.
The Republican governor wants to dismantle the north Florida seat held by Rep. Al Lawson, a Black Democrat.
The goal is to make the redistricting map more friendly to Republicans.
DeSantis asked the high court for an advisory opinion whether the district was protected under Florida’s voter-approved standards.
The court unanimously rejected DeSantis’ request, which was backed by the GOP-controlled Florida Legislature.
Rep. Kelly Skidmore, a Boca Raton Democrat working on the congressional map, said Democrats were pleased the courts “upheld the separation of powers.”
