Florida School District Cancels Civil Rights Lecture Citing Critical Race Theory
A Florida school district has canceled a presentation on the civil rights movement due to some people’s fears that it might address critical race theory.
Michael Butler, a history professor at Flagler College in St. Augustine, said his lecture has nothing to do with the controversial topic.
Critical Race theory is an academic examination of social, cultural and legal issues regarding race and racism in the United States.
Butler was scheduled to give the presentation about civil rights before and after the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to Osceola County School District teachers.
He said he was shocked to learn why the seminar had been canceled, but wasn’t surprised because educators feel increasingly intimidated over teaching about race.
