Five killed in southwest Niger
DOUALA, Cameroon (AA): A gendarme and four civilians were killed after terrorists attacked the Tillaberi region of Niger, the Nigerien Armed Forces General Staff said on Saturday evening.
“In the afternoon of July 14, 2023, a detachment of the national gendarmerie on a convoy escort mission on the Torodi-Makalondi stretch was the target of a complex terrorist attack,” the army said in a statement.
Following an “energetic retaliation,” two terrorists were killed and 19 people were wounded, including seven gendarmes, five soldiers and seven civilians, all of whom were evacuated to Niamey, the capital, according to the statement.
The Tillaberi region has on several occasions been the target of attacks by the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS).
