Federal judge blocks Louisiana’s 10 Commandments law for public schools
A federal judge has blocked a Louisiana law mandating the display of the Protestant 10 Commandments in all public school classrooms.
U.S. District Judge John deGravelles ruled that the requirement is “unconstitutional on its face,” noting that it would violate the separation of church and state.
The ruling responds to a lawsuit filed by Louisiana parents arguing that the law infringes on their right to guide their children’s religious upbringing.
Louisiana Attorney General Elizabeth Murrill pledged an appeal, while the ACLU celebrated the decision as a safeguard for students’ rights.
