Federal court halts California’s beard ban for peace officers
A federal court has halted California’s controversial “no beard policy” for peace officers.
The policy was enforced by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
It failed to accommodate officers who seek to maintain facial hair for religious or cultural reasons.
This legal action follows a lawsuit on behalf of Mubashar Ali.
Ali endured significant spiritual distress by shaving off his beard for nearly 18 months.
The suit was supported by the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Layli Shirani of CAIR says respecting religious beliefs is a fundamental right.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the US Department of Justice have been investigating and supporting this case.
The court’s suspension means affected officers can either continue working or take paid leave while a final decision is pending.
