Federal appeals court upholds conviction of Trump ex-advisor
The US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit has upheld the conviction of Steve Bannon, former advisor to ex-President Donald Trump, for contempt of Congress.
Bannon’s refusal to comply with a House subpoena led to his conviction in the Jan. 6, 2021, US Capitol attack case.
The House had authorized a committee to investigate the attack and issue subpoenas.
Bannon’s discussions on overturning election results and predictions of chaos on Jan. 6 prompted the subpoena, which he ignored.
Bannon appealed on four grounds, including disputing the mental state required for contempt, claiming authorization from government officials, and challenging the subpoena’s validity.
The court rejected his arguments saying he had forfeited objections and that his trial subpoenas were irrelevant.
Bannon has 90 days to petition the Supreme Court for a review of his conviction.
