FBI misused surveillance tools, says court
SAN FRANCISCO – A U.S. court has concluded that the Federal Investigation Bureau (FBI) spied on Americans and illegally searched digital data stores 278,000 times over several years.
A newly sealed, redacted court order says the agency searched information on Americans suspected of involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots and in protests following the assassination of George Floyd, in addition to political donors.
The FBI did not adhere to its standards and obtained information even though it had no evidentiary purpose, the court said.
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court ordered the FBI to fix the problems.
The revelations came at a time when the government is soliciting support for extending its surveillance powers under Section 702, which are set to expire at the end of the year.
