Far right extremists attack mosque and police in UK
Police in the North West England say a group believed to be supporters of the far-right extremist group the English Defense League attacked a local mosque.
Police have increased security around the mosque, which is close to the scene of the knife attack.
Bottles and rubbish bins were thrown at police who intervened against the group gathered outside the mosque.
One police officer suffered a broken nose and a police van was set on fire.
The violence came in the wake of a July 29 stabbing attack in the town of Southport.
A 17-year-old male suspect who now is in police custody is accused of stabbing several people, including children.
Police say three of them died and 10 people, including eight children, were injured.
Speculation about the identity of the 17-year-old suspect connected with the stabbing was being used to incite violence, with some assuming the perpetrator is Muslim.
However, police warned against speculation, explaining the person in custody was born in the UK.
They say the suspect is being questioned on suspicion of murder, and that he was from Banks in Lancashire but originally from Cardiff, the capital of Wales.
