Far-right Capitol riot plotter gets 5-year sentence
A far-right extremist group member from Kentucky has been sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
Dan Edwin Wilson communicated with militia groups, including the Oath Keepers and Three Percenters.
He also conspired to disrupt the peaceful transfer of presidential power from Donald Trump to Joe Biden.
Federal prosecutors and the judge emphasized Wilson’s actions were part of a larger plot to undermine democracy.
He has been found guilty of conspiring to impede police and illegally possessing firearms.
Wilson had prepared for violence, even posting online about his willingness to sacrifice himself.
His sentencing reflects the severe consequences for those who threaten the core principles of American governance.
Wilson was arrested in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, in May 2023.
Law enforcement seized six firearms and about 4,800 rounds of ammunition when they searched his home.
More than 1,400 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the attack on the Capitol.
About 950 of them have been convicted and sentenced, with roughly two-thirds receiving terms of imprisonment ranging from a few days to 22 years.
