Extreme heat estimated to kill almost 500,000 people annually: Guterres
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has drawn attention to the growing danger of rising temperatures around the world.
He says heat is estimated to kill almost half a million people a year, which is approximately 30 times more than tropical cyclones.
Guterres says he is launching a global demand with four areas of focus — caring for the most vulnerable, stepping up protections for workers, boosting the resilience of economies and societies using data and science.
He advises that the G20 must shift fossil fuel subsidies to renewables and support vulnerable countries and communities.
