Ex-Mayor Of Hiroshima Asks Russian President To Avoid Using Nukes In Ukraine
Anti-nuclear campaigner and former mayor of Japan’s Hiroshima prefecture urged Russian President Vladimir Putin not to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
Tadatoshi Akiba spoke during a news conference Thursday in Tokyo as Russia’s war with Ukraine rages on.
Akiba started a petition against the use of nuclear weapons.
He urged the world’s nuclear powers to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two Japanese cities flattened by U.S. atomic bombs during World War II to “learn about the damage a nuclear attack can bring.”
He also asked Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to meet Putin and other heads of nuclear-weapons states to convey the convictions of the survivors of the atomic bomb blasts.
