Ex-marine sentenced for Capitol riot assault and Nazi salute
An ex-Marine has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for his role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
The US District Court in Washington also imposed a $22,000 fine and 36 months of supervised release on Tyler Dykes.
Dykes was convicted for assaulting police officers.
He was also found to have displayed a Nazi salute during the riot, a claim he denies but is supported by video evidence.
Prosecutors recommended a five-year, three-month term, citing Dykes’ involvement in violent acts and his past participation in extremist events.
That includes the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that led to violence, killing a woman protestor.
Defense lawyers had argued for a two-year sentence for Dykes, highlighting his remorse and apology.
Previously, Dykes had pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting police and using a riot shield as a weapon.
Over 1,400 individuals have been charged in connection with the Capitol riot.
