‘Everyone in Gaza is hungry’: WFP Palestine Country Director
GAZA CITY- AFP
“There are people starving . . . and everyone in Gaza is hungry,” says Samer Abdel Jaber, the WFP Palestine Country Director.
“There are people starving in (Gaza) areas and we are not able to give basic food for,” says Samer, adding that the “needs are rising faster than we are able to respond.”
The UN says more than three months of fighting has displaced roughly 85 percent of the territory’s population, crowded into shelters and struggling to get food, water, fuel and medical care.
“WFP has been working with partners and communities to deliver food and communities as quickly as possible well and as many people as possible and also supporting local shops, bakeries to operate. So far we have reached around 1.4 million people with food but everyone in Gaza is hungry,” he explained.
Abdel Jaber added that although the UN was exploring all possible solutions, yet none is sufficient in the face of immense obstacles posed by restrictions from the Israeli occupation.
Jaber said, “There are people starving in areas and we are not able to give basic food. The needs are rising faster than we are able to respond we need to be able to bring in more supplies and we need safe access to reach people everywhere in Gaza not just those who are close to the borders.”
He insisted that the only solution was an urgent and complete cease-fire. “We need the long lasting ceasefire to stop the suffering.”
