EU welcomes cease-fire in Gaza
BRUSSELS (AA) – The European Union welcomed on Monday the truce between Israel and the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad following three days of Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.
“The European Union welcomes the announced cease-fire between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which should bring an end to the violence in and around Gaza,” the lead spokesperson of the bloc’s diplomatic service, Peter Stano, said in a statement.
He commended Egypt for playing a facilitating role in brokering the agreement and the United Nations, the United States and Qatar for providing support.
Reiterating the EU’s condemnation of civilian casualties, the statement stressed a “timely and thorough investigation” into the violence that left, among others, a “number of children and women, killed and injured in the Gaza Strip.”
Stano also stated that it is “crucial” to consolidate the cease-fire and to reopen crossings to allow humanitarian assistance and fuel to be transported to Gaza.
The Egyptian-brokered cease-fire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad took effect late on Sunday.
The cease-fire agreement came after three days of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, which left at least 44 Palestinians dead and over 360 others injured.
Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes in the area, citing an “imminent threat of attack” by the Islamic Jihad group following rising tensions across the Palestinian territories.
