Ethiopian Muslims Decry Restrictions During Ramadan
Muslim students in the Ethiopian capital Addis Abeba are frustrated after many schools prevented prayers and other activities during the month of Ramadan.
After meeting with secondary school principals, the Addis Abeba City Education Bureau said education should be free from religious activities.
Several reports this week showed many schools prevented Muslim students from observing prayer and kept them out of classes.
Prominent Muslim scholar Ustaz Abubeker Ahmed said many people are questioning who is behind the campaign to keep students out of school.
The city education bureau said activities in some schools under the guise of religion violate the rules governing students.
