Dutch government faces pressure over racism allegations in cabinet
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof is under increasing scrutiny to address allegations of racism within his government.
This is following the resignation of Nora Achahbar, the state secretary for benefits and customs.
Achahbar, who is of Moroccan descent, resigned last Friday.
She cited racist remarks made during cabinet meetings as the reason for her resignation.
Her decision follows violent clashes in Amsterdam earlier this month involving Israeli fans and Arab taxi drivers, which sparked heated Cabinet discussions.
Rabin Baldewsingh, the Dutch national coordinator against discrimination, is urging Schoof to release meeting records to prove no racism exists in his government.
He warns that failing to do so would damage the PM’s credibility.
He also highlighted the broader issue of systemic discrimination in Dutch politics.
Recent studies show a significant percentage of Muslims in the Netherlands experience discrimination.
Baldewsingh called for urgent action to address these issues.
