Discrimination against Muslims in search for housing in Austria
GENEVA (AA) – A study shows that the housing market in the Central European country of Austria is affected by racial discrimination.
A study commissioned by the Ombud for Equal Treatment (GAW) found that Muslims are particularly affected by discrimination.
The authors of the study responded to 157 housing advertisements in the Austrian cities of Graz, Vienna, Innsbruck, and Linz with Muslim names.
The first profile Muhammad Asif – a Muslim name – received acceptance in only 50% of the cases.
The second profile with the fictitious name Michael Gruber always received an appointment.
Sandra Konstatzky, the head of the study, told the media that the research aimed to show discrimination in the housing market.
The researcher, who called homeowners under the name Asif, was mostly told that the apartment was already taken.
In 4% of the cases, he was told that no apartment was currently available. In 34% of the cases, the landlords requested further documentation from Asif. In 25% of the cases, a written application was also requested.
The applicant Gruber, on the other hand, received an appointment to view the apartment directly in all calls.
