Diet choices can impact both health and the planet
BOSTON, Massachusetts – Researchers have discovered a link between a planet-friendly diet and a reduced risk of death from chronic diseases.
A study has found that individuals who followed a more sustainable diet were 25% less likely to die from cancer, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.
The research was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in Boston.
The plant-friendly diet includes grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. These foods have been found to have a positive impact on our health and the environment.
The researchers behind this study have created a new dietary scoring system called the Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI).
This index takes into account scientific evidence that examines the effects of food on both human health and the environment.
The PHDI evaluates various foods and assigns scores based on their impact on chronic diseases like heart disease, bowel cancer, diabetes, and stroke.
It also considers the environmental impact of each food item, including factors like water usage, land usage, nutrient pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.
